Remember the time of the parlor from Victorian days–a room maintained primarily to receive visitors? The furniture was pretty formal and uncomfortable, the pictures were of long-gone ancestors, the walls were dark and the furnishings austere. For a time the modern living room was thought of in much the same way–a fairly formal room kept so through a minimum of use, a room with no clutter and an unused feel to it. A room to keep dusted and ready for an infrequent formal or semi-formal use. That traditional utilization of the living room is changing. In fact, in some homes the wall between the living room and the den has been removed making the combined area one large great room where the family gathers to play and have fun.

Contributing to this changed concept of the living room has been the general shift to a more informal, laid-back lifestyle. The living room is being seen as more of a room where “living” is done and done on a daily basis. How do you convert a previously formal, mostly unused area of the home to a gathering spot while still maintaining the room as the area to meet and greet visitors and strangers? The room will still need to be policed and maintained in the event strangers drop by or in case an area more businesslike than the TV room is needed for conversation.

Seating is important in this era when furniture is more for use than just for show as it has been in the past. You want ample seating arranged to facilitate conversation and interaction. You want the sofas and chairs to be comfortable, not just attractive. They should be arranged so that the occupants are naturally facing one another and everyone can see everyone else. Warm, vibrant colors tend to make the room more hospitable. Current family pictures, scrapbooks, contemporary magazines on the coffee table proclaim a lived-in, vital area.

An area to concentrate on in this makeover is lighting. In older living rooms the lighting was just barely adequate because the room was seldom used. The lamps and light fixtures tended to be formal looking and fragile. Today’s lighting should be bright and should create a cheery atmosphere, one where reading or game-playing can be easily engaged in.

Another area that can brighten a room and be a conversation piece at the same time is that of floor coverings. Colorful, patterned area rugs can complement the furniture and room décor while conveying warmth and closeness. Intricate patterns or unusual colorations may illicit comments or questions from guests and visitors and serve as conversation starters. Those same area rugs can provide family members with comfort and warmth while playing games on the floor or just taking a nap.

Articles that will stimulate interest and conversation among guests and family members can be left out in view. Trophies or photo albums or vacation souvenirs can be used as natural ice-breakers with visitors while providing the homey touch that indicates that living is done in this room.

Shifting a living room from just a seldom-used formal sitting room into an area where guests and family members alike feel comfortable will take some planning but it can be done without too much trouble or cost. Guests and strangers will find a warm and inviting atmosphere and the family will have another area in which to talk and socialize.

Home Design has never been so affordable with these blue rugs.

It’s difficult times, recession is hitting all of us. Recession has effects on all of us - be it single, married with children or living on pension. Unfortunately, its an economic crisis and an economic cycle that happens. How to survive a recession is probably the question on everybody’s mind now.

If you are employed you may be scared that you will lose your job or lose your leave benefits. You can help yourself by doing a second job. It can just be a part time job or a casual job. You can even start a home job or business.

Supplement your income, you may not be happy with your job. But this is planning for the future. Having a second income source is never a pain, everybody loves more money.

If you have a mortgage, you may see the interest rates going down. This does not mean you can spend the savings from your mortgage. Put the extra money back into your mortgage, you can replay it quickly.

If were planning to retire soon, then you may be have keep working for some more years. You may have got a shock when you received your superannuation or retirement benefits. Plan for your future and talk to your financial advisor.

You can invest in share market, but this only for short term returns. The returns may not be very big, but you can still make some money in shares. So use the situation for your needs.

All people renting should think about buying a house and getting a mortgage. If you calculate the savings in rent and mortgage repayments, you will know that you will be saving more.

Above all be positive and do not give up. Keep up your spirits, because after a dark night there is always a bright day. This is how to survive a recession.

Gift giving has taken on international significance lately! That's right, the presents heads of states exchange is now discussed on news programs all over the world.

Gift giving has taken on international significance lately! That’s right, the presents heads of states exchange is now discussed on news programs all over the world.

In the past few days I have heard several U.S. news pundits discussing presidential gifts. Apparently, President and Mrs. Obama gave Queen Elizabeth a recording of show music. Gift-watchers made the time to complain to the national gift oversight board (joke!) about this electronic present. Some U.S. gift experts have better gift ideas; they say collectibles like antique home accessories and local handicrafts are more appropriate presents. They claim that the musical device is too cold and impersonal.

Perhaps Americans are still worried about pleasing the mother country. I say this because most British reporters aren’t fussing so much about the gift. In fact, they think it’s topnotch. They assert that the present to Queen Elizabeth was touching in its sensitivity to Her Majesty’s personal taste. Good work on the part of the Presidential staff, which carefully researched the Queen’s taste and filled the device with all the light tunes she enjoys.

I can understand why people might think world peace and economic security depend on this high-level gift exchange. I understand this irrational belief because I often think that my friendships rise or fall based on the gifts I offer. When I regain my senses I realize that, while presents do mean a great deal, they do not determine the fate of the world or of my relationships.

I am fortunate to have in my life good friends, a loving family and an ever-increasing number of sweet babies. They all require presents. My friend Sally, a giver of lovely gifts, has an organized and efficient method of shopping. She shops at the same two local stores all the time and always finds a special clothing accessory, garden tool, or home décor object. Her stores even gift-wrap for free.

Personally, I avoid stores whenever possible. If I can’t find it at the grocery store, I’ll do without. The Internet expands my buying options considerably. I have found several websites that carry gifts I’d be proud to give to anyone on my shopping list. Whether I want books, toys, clothing, seasonal decorations, or practical gifts for the home, my favorite online markets never fail me. I often go online without any idea of what to get and wind up with the most perfect present.

In addition to having great selections with new items every time I look, my online shops have terrific customer service. I can get online when the spirit moves me and order a year’s worth of gifts and the customer service reps will make sure the presents arrive at the right time. And while most of them charge for gift-wrapping and shipping, when you add it up, their services are well worth the cost. They have everything I need for gift giving, no matter what the occasion.

If anyone of international importance asks me my opinion on gift giving, this is what I will say: Gifts are tokens of love, respect, and/or appreciation. There is joy in both giving and receiving. But gifts won’t make or break the future. What matters most are the love, respect, and appreciation the gifts represent.

People who hear about individuals going on luxury holidays generally assume that those people are rich and that they just have money to burn. However, luxury holidays don’t have to cost as much as you might think. There are ways to have a luxurious holiday that doesn’t break the bank. People often have a bad holiday experience because they get stressed out. They get so caught up in the planning of the trip that they forget it’s supposed to be fun.

They try to schedule their days because they don’t want to miss anything, and when they do that they find that they are frazzled and that they have too much to do - just like when they’re home or at work. With that being the case, they can’t relax and neither can their family. It ends up being the same old thing, just in a different place. Oh, and it costs a lot of money, too.

With the right kind of planning and prioritizing, though, it doesn’t have to be stressful and it doesn’t have to cost as much. Planning early enough is the key, so that you aren’t rushed at the last minute and so you don’t have to worry about spending a lot for things that would have cost you much less had you booked them months ago.

You can also go in the off season. That’s not such a good choice if you’re planning on going to the beach, for example. You need the sun and the warm weather to really enjoy that. If the beach scene isn’t really for you, though, you can book your luxury family break in Cornwall during a time of year when many people won’t be booking. You’ll get a reduced rate, and something you’ll even be able to upgrade to something much nicer for only a few dollars more. Hotel and resort staff, as well as tour guides and restaurant and shop workers won’t be as busy during those off times, either, so the chances of them being friendlier and more helpful are higher.

You can get some extra perks that way, and you won’t have to pay anything more for them. Having locals give you advice and show you around because they aren’t very busy can go a long way toward making a great holiday experience. In the end, a great holiday comes from doing what you love. If you love luxury, advanced planning and careful thought can let you have that luxury at a price that you don’t feel guilty about.

Ok this task is a little difficult but not impossible. Some changes definitely have to be made; changes so small that it doesn’t seem like you’ve made changes in your daily routine. Let’s put it this way, if you don’t tell your spouse he/she won’t even notice that you’ve taken on this fitness change.

We start by eating more meals at smaller portions. To assist you in eating smaller portions it helps to use smaller plates.

In each portion it’s important to use low calorie foods such as, broccoli, green apples, radishes, etc.

More walking with a focus on tightening your stomach; every move of the body should put its attention on the abdomen muscles; on losing the belly fat.

No soft drinks and in general as little sugar intake as possible.

Less stress.

Slow eating is good for your health. Don’t rush to eat your meal. Give your metabolism time to digest the food. Don’t load it on all at once.

Drink more water and if possible at room temperature with lemon for 10 days, or you can try 1,5 liters boiled water with green apple peel and seeds. To make the taste more appealing you can add sage. Do this for 4 days every 15 days. It’s amazing how much you can lose by doing this.

STRETCH twice a day for 15 minutes especially in the abdomen area. If you have a pull-up bar at home you can hang from it twice a day for 5 minutes at a time.

When you’re sitting at your desk breathe in slowly and breathe out from your nose with force and tighten your ab muscles.

When you’re having sex (sex is overall the best workout) choose positions that train your abdomen muscles.
If you’re doing house chores, vacuuming for example, tighten your abs for every move while using the breathing exercise mentioned above.

When you’re taking a shower, make a bet with yourself. You’ll keep your abs tightened until you finish your shower. This exercise proves to work well but it’s imperative that you stretch afterwards.

Every morning in bed take 5 minutes to breathe. Focus on tightening your stomach while breathing in, and while breathing out relax and focus on how that day you’re going to embrace more exercises on the ab area. You could add a short jog in your yard or playing ball with your child.

You can’t imagine what huge results a focused goal can bring. A simple walk, if completely focused, can be more intense than a full workout.

The big secret with focused exercises is what I like to call the secret of the rock and water. One drop every day is capable of wearing down even the hardest rock.

When you are house or apartment rental hunting, many people have fallen in love with a place then moved in. After all the hard work of getting all your stuff in place do you discover that this new abode of yours, isn’t exactly the answer to all your rental apartment or rental house dreams. A lot of people fall into the trap, excited by the thoughts of living in a new apartment or house. These renters tend to overlook some important details.

Some of these details include: just a month after you move in, you discover that your neighbor upstairs likes to play bowling in the hallway in the middle of the night or those thick plaster walls you were so happy with, block your cell phone signal.

Do not despair. There is a quick and easy list for you to follow when apartment rental hunting. By following these tips you will be able to find a house or apartment rental which will fit perfectly for you.

The Lease

• Is there a security deposit? Are there any move in fees? Many larger houses and apartment buildings limit the days and hours when new residents can move into a rental apartment or house. This is to limit the disruption to other residents.
• Are the utilities included with the house or rental apartment?
• Are the lease terms flexible? Some larger houses and apartment buildings offer options such as six month or 12 month leases.
• Is the house or rental apartment rent controlled?
• Is there a broker’s fee? The fees for house or rental apartments are common in cities such as New York.

Amenities

• What’s the cell phone reception like? When you are house and rental apartment hunting, be sure to take out your cell phone and walk around the property to test the signal.
• Is there off-street parking available? If so, how much does it cost? On-street parking is another option. This works out cheaper but be sure to check if you need to register your car or if you have to buy a resident parking sticker.
• Does the house or apartment have extra storage? Sometimes if the closet or storage space is small, some buildings have extra storage for a fee.
• Is the laundry on site or in the house or rental apartment unit? Do the washing machines look new or look worn out? What kind of system do they use, a card system or coins?
• Does the house or rental apartment have air conditioning? If not, is it allowed to install air con units?
• Does the kitchen have appliances like garbage disposal, a stove, a refrigerator or a dishwasher? Are they new?
• It’s a good idea to bring along a tape measure so that you can measure the rooms and doorways.
• Are pets allowed in the building? If so, are there any fees to be paid.

The Neighborhood

• What is the access to public transportation like? Sometimes an ad might say that the rental apartment or house is “close to the subway/bus”, its better to walk it yourself to see exactly how far it is.
• Is the house or rental apartment far away from grocery stores, gyms, restaurants, drugstores, discos, bars or cafes?

Building

• What type of people live in the building? Is it full of college students or retired people?
• If the ad says the house or rental apartment is “walk-up”, that means there are no elevators. This might be of concern if you have a lot to move or if you have some oversized furniture.
• It’s a good idea to visit the house or rental apartment during the evening when more of the residents are more likely to be home. What is the noise level like?
• If you need work done, how fast is the landlord to respond?

Ask these questions, and you will surely find a rental apartment or house that suits you and your lifestyle perfectly. Are you into keeping it real estate …?

We’ve all read the doom and gloom real estate headlines. We all know the market has nosedived in the past two years. So, is it fantasy to think you can sell your house quickly right now? Another way to phrase the question — what must you do to sell your house quick?

First - it is possible to sell a home in short order in this market, but it is fantasy to just wish it into happening. Here are some reality measures to take just to temper your emotions:

Reality No. 1 - Your market is softer now than it was two years ago. Yes, homes are selling, but generally they are selling for less, and it is taking longer for homes to sale according to current national trends published by the National Association of Realtors.

Reality No. 2 - The market is very competitive. There are more sellers than buyers, in some instances a lot more. This is why it’s called a “buyer’s market”.

Reality No. 3 - You must set yourself apart to make your property sell quickly, if at all. What can you do to make your home more “saleable” than the next home two streets over? Now - take action on those things you can do!

Reality No. 4 - You cannot over-list your house in a tight market. I don’t care what you paid, or how much you think you want to walk away from at closing, in a down market over-listing your home takes away 100% of the possibility of your home selling quickly.

Reality No. 5 - You must take action. Act now, don’t wait. Find a good real estate agent right now. Get your paperwork in order today. Do things today rather than tomorrow. Those that wait have no chance of a quick home sale.

OK - now that you have a little reality checking to do - do it, and get that home sold fast. Despite the down market, interest rates are quite low, there are hungry buyers out there, and the market will stabilize in due time. Be creative and be proactive in your marketing approach - sitting around hoping and waiting is the wrong road to take in supply-heavy real estate market. Homes do sell everyday, some do actually sell quickly, but you must always remember to keep your enthusiasm in check during difficult times.

You shouldn't want to end dates with disaster. Dates should be enjoyable experience for the two of you. To do this, proper preparation and successful dating tips should be remembered.

You shouldn’t want to end dates with disaster. Dates should be enjoyable experience for the two of you. To do this, proper preparation and successful dating tips should be remembered.

Before a date, ample preparation is required. Make yourself as attractive as possible. You can do this by honing your muscles in the gym. There are lots of exercise routines that produce fast results. Consult your fitness expert on what workout is best for you. It is a given fact that men with beautiful bodies have high attraction levels. On your part, a chiseled body gives you confidence.

When picking a date, check if the two of you have the same interests. Compatibility is an important factor as the whole engagement will be dull if you have nothing to talk about. When both of you have the same political, social, educational, and family views, you are assured that you can carry the conversation for the rest of the night. The girl’s friends, co-workers, and parents are reliable sources for background information.

As you do your compatibility check with the girl’s friends, try to ask successful dating tips from them too. Her friends should know what traditions and preferences she has during dates. You also need to research about the woman’s limitations. Is the woman a vegetarian? IS she a feminist? Is she allergic to seafood?

Prepare for the date by choosing the best clothing that expresses your personality. While you go with clothes that reveal the real you, consider the place and occasion also. The clothes should be pleasing to the eye but never too flashy. It is not your aim to appear gay or too suave. Never wear tattered jeans in a posh restaurant. Always be clean in dates. Take a bath, brush your teeth, and wear a mild scent.

First dates are never very expensive. This is for practical reasons. First, you want to stay on budget. Do not push for a 200 dollar meal if you know you’ll crumble in debts later. Second, she already agreed to see you. It means that she agrees to go with you as long as the place is safe. A quality date does not cost a fortune.

During the date, do not be nervous. Delve into the conversation. Crack some jokes. Even corny ones will tickle her. In short, enjoy the whole evening. First dates are there for you to get acquainted with a potential partner. Do not ask her out for sex right there and then. If you really like her judging from the dating night results, be patient and ask her for another date.

If you got lucky on the first date though, always wear protection. Practicing safe sex benefits both parties.

At the end of the date, show appreciation for her effort. Thank her for coming even if the date turns out unpleasant. Be a gentleman. Even if you are not compatible with the girl, she may serve as a very valuable reference of you in the future.

Put these successful dating tips to mind and you will have fun in your date.

In my short life, after years of talking too much, I’ve come to realize that if one is always speaking, one never listens. If you never listen to others, well, you’re limiting your access to a lot of knowledge and information. Recently, after much deliberation I thought I’d check out what the world of Chat Rooms is like. People talk to each other by text, voice, and web cam. This is a really big phenomenon; I wanted to see what all the fuss is about.

I expect there are many chat rooms where people with similar interests get to know each other, and share their perspectives on various aspects of life. These are great, much cheaper than telephones, and multiple, random people can chat to one another simultaneously.

But I speak the truth, and my preconceived ideas about mindless gossip from jaded humans were sadly affirmed as I arbitrarily checked chat rooms that supposedly discussed important subjects. It seems some people are just very bored, and want to be cool and swear on-line, insulting others, and giving this area of information technology a bad name. I think a lot of people are using the rooms solely for personal conversation that contextually no one else can understand.

I went to a chat room about religion, and then to one about tattoos and it seemed like the same people were talking. Most of the conversation didn’t even touch the supposed subject matter. It was definitely a disenchanting experience but hopefully with more research I hope to come across some serious rooms where the true intent of the creators has come to fruition.

I guess it’s good that bored people in our technological society have others to talk to. It means depressed adolescents may feel more connected to others and not so alone in the world, maybe even having a positive effect on a possibly suicidal youth. But, I do feel this nonsensical chitchat is a sign of our next generation’s apathetic view of present reality in our postmodern culture. When reading the text from a supposedly religious discussion, and hearing graphic use of derogatory terminology, I really have to wonder about the present spiritual beliefs of my culture.

I’m a true believer of the concept that technology is here to further the consciousness of humanity. Computers and the Internet can help bring all of us in the world together, thus evolving our society to the next level. After looking at chat rooms, I feel there is a need to integrate more wisdom and compassion into our ‘new world’ generation. Having the technology is great, but it is only one half of the equation. To make the Internet work properly, I think we need to instill the same faith we have in science, into a faith that encompasses the actual creators of the information and communication tools-humanity itself. We seem to realize that we can invent many great things, but it looks like we’re missing out on the great truth: that we ourselves are part of, and made of something great in itself: Life. (Existence!)
